Helpline relief in online fraud

KOLKATA: If you fall victim to online fraud, you don't have to do the harried rounds of police stations.


The detective department's bank fraud section has come out with a helpline (8585063104), where victims can lodge complaints. The officers at the help desk will direct victims to the officers concerned and guide them about the steps they need to follow to stop further damage even before the FIR is formally lodged.

The CID's anti-fraud section is likely join them soon.


According to a source, the city on an average witnesses 50-80 cases of cyber fraud each week. Mostly , the victims are occasional users of the internet and are not aware of the dos and don'ts of online safety. "Keeping this in mind, police commissioner Rajeev Kumar has asked the detective department to launch a helpline number for such victims," said an officer.

"The bank fraud section of DD has started a 24-hour helpline, where calls from the victims will be attended to. The number is 8585063104.The basic steps will be taken based on the merits of each case and the caller will be advised accordingly. 


The aim is to save the money of the victims, who unknowingly share secret data of their bank accounts, credit and debit cards and even OTPs with fraudsters over phone. A real-time response to the victims is our aim. We want this mobile number to be circulated widely . We have asked local police to talk to us using this number once victims reach the police station and seek help," said a senior detective department officer.


In the last six months, 120140 complaints have been lod 140 complaints have been lodged with the detective department's bank fraud section every month. Police said the gangs mostly target the elderly, home makers and students who panic after hearing that their accounts have been blocked.

According to joint CP (crime) Debashish Boral, the first such case was registered on July 1 last year at Beliaghata.
